If you have insomnia, you know how frustrating it is. You toss, turn, and stare at the ceiling. If you finally get to sleep at the early hours of the morning, you wake up too early and it feels like you got no rest at all. You’re probably at your wits end. Before you go looking to your doctor for prescription insomnia cures, though, you should look into some natural insomnia remedies.

Natural insomnia remedies are, essentially, any treatments you can do that don’t involve introducing harsh chemicals or side-effects. For example, there are herbs, like rosemary and lavender, which are great for relieving the symptoms of insomnia. There are several other good options too.

Diet:

Your daily diet can have a huge effect on your insomnia. I'm sure you've heard, for example, you shouldn’t indulge in spicy foods before going to bed. That’s completely true, as they could give you heart burn or nightmares and prevent you from resting comfortably. What you do eat and drink is usually just as essential as what you don’t.

Milk, Honey & Tea:

Warm milk, tea and honey are all great natural cures for insomnia. Taking one of them prior to going to bed could make all the difference in the world. For that matter, you can even put some honey in your milk or your tea, if you want the best results. Chamomile tea is a great one for helping you sleep, but nearly any hot tea is soothing and relaxing, provided that it’s not caffeinated.

Exercise:

Exercise is another excellent cure for insomnia. The thought is to exercise enough throughout the day that you are tired when you want to go to bed at night. If you don’t exercise, your body still has a lot of stored up energy at the end of the day, so it can be hard to sleep.

Light Limitations:

As humans, we naturally tend to be awake when it’s light out and tired when it’s dark out, aside from a small number of folks who work night shifts. Therefore, if your bedroom is too bright, you aren’t likely to sleep well. So, be sure that, before bed, you shut blinds and curtains, shut lights off and also turn off your Tv.

Aroma and Music Therapy:

Even though light is not helpful to sleep, sound isn’t bad the slightest bit, if it’s the correct type of sound. Soft music or a recording of a calming sound, such as waves washing up on a shore, could help you drift off to sleep . Not surprisingly, the same isn’t the case with loud music, which can interrupt your sleep cycle.

Along those same lines, specific essential oils have been observed to help people sleep, such as lavender oil. The scent of it is found to be calming and sleep-inducing.

So, as you can see, there are various simple and natural insomnia remedies and treatments that can work for you. It doesn’t always have to be prescription medication. You might simply need to have a little patience and take a few steps to help yourself along the path to getting a good night’s sleep.
